War On The Boards: A Rebounding Manual War On The Boards: A Rebounding Manual

Never before in the history of the game of basketball has anyone devoted a single text to the art of rebounding. This book is written with the desire that it will partially fill the void that has existed in basketball literature. Perhaps, this work will guide coaches to place a high degree of emphasis on this neglected phase of the game. Most books devote chapter after chapter to offensive and defensive fundamentals, but include only a few pages of information on rebounding. It is paradoxical that in this era of high powered offenses and defenses, basketball literature fails to give emphasis to the very tools and techniques that are necessary to build strong offenses and defenses — namely, rebounding. Rebounding in basketball is more than a mere fundamental. It represents a struggle or conquest in a form which seldom draws the praise of coach or fan. Rebounding makes basketball a contact sport. Is is symbolic of the sacrifice, the emotion, mental toughness, and hard work which precedes victory in most of life's endeavors. It is my fervent wish that the readers will share with me the joy and excitement that is contained within the world of rebounding. Kindly allow this manual to serve as your constant guide, as you seek a higher level of achievement in basketball. Keep in mind that "It is not where you are today that counts, it's the direction in which you are headed."...published on 2/7/2017 Learn more

Beyond Xs and Os: What I Learned About Friendship and Success from a College Football Legend Beyond Xs and Os: What I Learned About Friendship and Success from a College Football Legend

Tom Berthel first met Hall of Fame football coach Hayden Fry when, in the mid-1980s, his investment firm, Berthel Fisher & Co., became a corporate sponsor of the University of Iowa Athletic Department. This business partnership not only helped Berthel Fisher establish a winning public image, but it also gave birth to one of the most important and enduring friendships of Tom Berthel’s life. Fry became a mentor and father figure to Berthel, and the wisdom Fry bestowed on him through their mutual friendship taught Berthel invaluable lessons in leadership, motivation, and what it takes to be a winner in business and in life.

These are the lessons that form the core of Beyond Xs and Os. In the book, Tom Berthel recounts the many lessons he learned from Coach Fry—some but not all related to football—and explains how they helped shape his life and business. In each chapter, Berthel outlines a specific lesson he learned from Coach Fry, explains how he integrated these philosophies into his business and personal life, and offers advice to help readers apply them to their own lives and businesses.

Each chapter also features a special “Postgame with Coach Fry” sidebar written by the venerable Coach Fry himself, in which he reflects on the events and lessons depicted in the chapter and offers a deeper perspective on each, enriching the lesson....published on 9/1/2010 Learn more

Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph

'Work hard, and don’t look for excuses', C. Vivian Stringer’s parents told her, 'and you can achieve anything.' But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times.

A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-White cheerleading squad in the 60s. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her 14-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically Black college to the national championships - a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill, fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four.

Through these dark times and others, Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.

Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story - love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last word....published on 3/4/2008 Learn more

A "high porch picnic" is a Texas expression for "an exceptionally good time" During Hayden Fry's glorious career as one of college football's most unique coaches, that's a good way to describe his life. Ranked 10th on the all-time collegiate list for Division 1 victories, Fry successfully combined his football coaching savvy with a down-home charm to make him one of the game's most colorful personalities. Hayden Fry tells of his childhood days in Odessa, Texas, his introduction of African-American athletes to the Southwest Conference, his relationships with various celebrities such as George Bush and Roy Orbison, and his rise to fame as the State of Iowa's most recognizable citizen....published on 3/1/1999 Learn more

Coaching Wrestling Successfully Coaching Wrestling Successfully

Dan Gable redefined the term wrestling champion, setting a new standard of excellence for athletes and coaches. Defeated only once throughout his high school and college wrestling careers and unscored upon in his 1972 Olympic gold medal performance, Gable didn't just win on the mat, he dominated his opponents in a relentless, physical style.

Gable brought that same competitive toughness and determination to mastering coaching-and the championships came, year after year. In the 21 seasons he was head coach, his University of Iowa teams won 15 national championships and 21 Big Ten championships.

Now, in Coaching Wrestling Successfully, Gable presents the blueprint to becoming a wrestling champion. He covers every facet of his formula for success-a guiding philosophy, proven motivational tools, guidelines for proper nutrition and weight control, daily and year-round practice plans, effective instructional methods, correct wrestling technique, and winning match strategies. ...published on 9/28/1998 Learn more

Bump Elliott: The Best of College Athletics Bump Elliott: The Best of College Athletics

Chalmers 'Bump' Elliott had a remarkable career in college sports. He is the only man to participate in the Rose Bowl in five different capacities: player, assistant coach, head coach, assistant athletic director, and athletic director.

Bump Elliott left an indelible mark on three Big Ten schools. As a football player, he won a conference championship at Purdue University in 1943 and a national championship at the University of Michigan in 1947. He later served as Michigan's head football coach for ten seasons, leading them to victory in the 1965 Rose Bowl.

Bump was the athletic director at the University of Iowa from 1970-91, where his teams captured 30 Big Ten titles and 12 NCAA championships. As Iowa's athletic director, he hired some of the biggest names in Hawkeye sports history, including Hayden Fry, Lute Olson, Tom Davis, and Dan Gable.

Don't Flinch - Barry Alvarez: The Autobiography The Story of Wisconsin's All-Time Winningest Coach Don't Flinch - Barry Alvarez: The Autobiography The Story of Wisconsin's All-Time Winningest Coach

Despite inheriting a moribund college football program, and half-empty stadium, Barry Alvarez never compromised his values, never flinched - even after a 1-10 first season - and never stopped believing in his blue print for success at the University of Wisconsin. By establishing a solid foundation, adhering to fundamentals and demanding an uncommon toughness from his players, Alvarez became the architect of three Rose Bowl triumphs in the 90's and became the school's all-time winningest football coach. He left an indelible mark on the Badgers during his 16 seasons on the sidelines. He sustained the success by sticking to a plan rooted to his upbringing in Western Pennyslvania and his exposure to three legendary coaches, Nebraska's Bob Devaney, Iowa's Hayden Fry and Notre Dame's Lou Holtz.

In his autobiography, he talks about the lessons that he learned from his mentors, the hurdles that he had to overcome as a young assistant and high school coach, and the challenge of taking over his own college program while living in a fishbowl, especially from his family's perspective. Alvarez maps out a strategy and game plan for young coaches who are seeking to achieve similar goals, and he also talks about his future as Wisconsin athletics director, and the future of college football....published on 9/1/2006 Learn more
