RECAP

South Bend had received 8 inches of snow in the two days prior to the game, but the use of a tarp helped keep the field clean and in good condition for game time. It was a cold and windy day at Notre Dame Stadium, and the visiting sideline did not have heaters on the 13 degree day.

Notre Dame Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte hit a 66 yard touchdown pass into the wind to make the score 14-0 Irish going into halftime. The Hawkeyes would not score all day and ended up giving up 14 more points in the 4th quarter, while the Irish were going into the wind again. The Iowa offense only got past the Notre Dame 45 yard line one time all day in the 4th quarter. Iowa was also only able to manage 48 yards rushing on the cold day.

Notre Dame head coach Era Parseghian had appeared on the cover of Time Magazine one day earlier.

The Notre Dame fans were on the field making a tunnel as the Irish came out of the locker room at halftime. The tunnel got in the way of the Hawkeyes team as they tried to come onto the field.
