Oregon scored 24 unanswered points after Iowa led 6-0, and it looked like a blowout. However, in the next 11 minutes in the 3rd quarter, Iowa exploded for four touchdowns and stopped Oregon at the goal line as the game ended.

Bob Longley returned a punt for 94 yards (see highlight video) to start the comeback. Iowa trailed 24-13. Jerry Faske and Jack Dittmer connected on a 21-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to 24-20 with 12 minutes left. But Oregon ran 37 yards for a TD to regain the lead at 31-20. Fullback Bill Reichardt scored Iowa's final two touchdowns, including one on a 99-yard kickoff return. Iowa took a 34-31 lead with 6 minutes remaining. Oregon wasn't finished, and drove down to the Hawks 5-yard line. The Iowa defense held strong, stopping the explosive Duck offense on 4 straight downs.

Oregon fumbled 3 times that led to 2 Iowa touchdowns. As of 2000, it was the largest comeback in school history (18 points).
