HIGH SCHOOL: Ed Horton attended Lanphier High School and lived in or near Springfield, Illinois. He was a Third-team Parade All-American (1985) and named Illinois Mr. Basketball (1985). He averaged 25.8 points and 13.9 rebounds a game during his senior season, and shot 56 percent from the field. His junior year, he averaged 21 points and nearly 15 rebounds a game. He played varsity for four years, and averaged 17.7 points a game over four seasons. He was named to every all-state team, including The Chicago Tribune's Super 15. He was from the same school as Kevin Gamble, and they together lead the Lions to the state title in his sophomore season, then he led his team to the state championship title game his senior season. He was leaning towards Illinois and Purdue, but switched to Iowa shortly after Gamble transferred to Iowa.

COLLEGE: He was recruited to Iowa by George Raveling, and played one season with him, but finished his career with Tom Davis. He ended with 877 rebounds, which ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. He is also 17th on Iowa's all-time scoring list with 1,372 points (as of 2018). He was named First Team All-Big Ten in the 1988–89 season after averaging 18.3 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game.

PROFESSIONAL: He was selected by the Washington Bullets in the second round (39th pick overall) of the 1989 NBA draft. He played one full season in the NBA, appearing in 45 games and averaging 4.5 ppg for the Bullets during the 1989–90 season. He played many seasons in other leagues and in other countries through the 1997 season.
