After falling behind (3-0) in the first five minutes of the game, Iowa fought off first game jitters and went on to defeat Div. I-AA Northern Iowa, 34-13. Northern Iowa blocked a Nick Gallery punt and turned it into a field goal to take a brief lead. Iowa would come back with 28 unanswered points before halftime. Hawkeye wide receiver Tim Dwight had two of the first half's three touchdowns, scoring on a run of nine yards and a 22-yard reception from Matt Sherman. Sherman began the second half by throwing the first of what would turn out to be three interceptions to Tyree Talton. Northern Iowa converted with another field goal. Sedrick Shaw rushed for 95 of his 102 total yards in the second half and scored a touchdown on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. Northern Iowa's only touchdown of the day came on a 30-yard pass from Chris Berg to Dedric Ward with 4:27 to go in the game. Sherman completed 11 of 21 passes for 230 yards. The Iowa defense stifled the Panther ground game, allowing only 43 yards rushing.
