Unable to get the running game on track, Iowa suffered its third consecutive loss at the hands of Illinois by a score of 26-7. After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, Matt Sherman hooked up with Tim Dwight for a 12-yard touchdown pass early in the second period to take a 7-3 lead. That would be the last score for Iowa, as the Illinois defense would take charge, limiting to Iowa to just 20 yards rushing for the day, including only four in the second half. Illinois scored a touchdown with 2:35 remaining in the first half to take the lead for good. Illinois scored two touchdowns and a field goal in the second half and shut down the Iowa offense to cap the 19-point win. Sherman threw for 223 yards in the game, but hurled four final quarter interceptions. The inability to stop the run was again Iowa achilles heel as the Illini rushed for 244 yards, including 152 in the second half. Linebacker Bobby Diaco led the team with 13 tackles, including three tackles for loss.
