RECAP

The Hawks had a bowl bid on the line, and jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead, led by 3 TDs by Owen Gill. But the Spartans came back to score 15 points and cut the deficit to 6 points by shutting out the Hawks. MSU had the ball with 1 minute remaining, but Bobby Stoops intercepted a pass with 30 seconds remaining to secure the win. During the game, Ron Hawley ran into the goal posts and knocked over one of the posts. The posts had been replaced earlier in the week from metal to wood in anticipation of fans storming the field.

The defense held the Spartans to 2 yards on 29 carries. The Hawks accepted the invitation to the Peach Bowl after the game.
