Down 26-6 in the 4th quarter, the Hawks scored 21 points, the last with nine seconds left, to make the game more respectable. The OSU defense bottled up Ed Podolak, limiting him to 45 yards on 15 carries. Iowa used two QBs in the comeback, Larry Lawrence was 13-of-20 for 178 yards and Mike Cilek was 7-of-11 for 68 yards.

The cold and rain did not help the field conditions and did not help the Hawkeyes strength on offense. The band did not play at halftime to preserve the field. Some writers said the field was completely torn up after the game.

The Iowa offense broke the Big Ten single season scoring record set by Ohio State in 1950.

One Iowa fan ran onto the field and stole Woody Hayes' hat after the game. In the post game Woody was commenting, after being asked if his team had any injuries. "Just one - Jan White, and do you know how the hell he got hurt? Sitting right there on the bench. I think that's ridiculous to have those benches so close to the sidelines." He then kicked a bench in the locker room and left the post game interview saying, "That's all I've got to say."
