Big Ten Champions, College World SeriesBig Ten Champions, College World Series

The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten conference with a 13-3 record (25-17 overall), and qualified for the 1972 College World Series. The Hawks were led by future MLB All-Star Jim Sundberg, Jim Cox, Bill Heckroth, Larry Schutzius, Mark Tschopp, Ray Smith, Tom Hurn, and Fred Mims.

In the district 4 qualifying tournament, the Hawks lost to Central Michigan 7-2, then defeated Northern Illinois 8-1 in the consolation round. They defeated Central Michigan 4-3, and won both games against Bowling Green (4-2 and 7-5) to qualify for the College World Series for the first time in school history.

In the CWS, the Hawks lost to Arizona State 2-1 in the quarterfinals, then lost to Temple 13-9, finishing in 7th place.
